Kingfest dates: This weekend, June 22-24

Submitted By Richard Flohil

Jun 20, 2007

The event is Kingfest, a music festival featuring performances from some of Canada's best artists.

The date is next weekend, June 22-24.

The site is the serene, green, rolling campus of Seneca College. a few minutes north of King City, off the 400 just above Canada's Wonderland.

The weather is likely to be as warm, sunny and breeze-cooled as the city is likely to be crowded, over-heated, dusty and smoggy.

And there are cool day-time events for music fans and their kids, with a full programme of music concerts and workshops, a children's area, a busy crafts area, and a stage that features a raft of great performers from the 905 area - local programming with the aim of showing the real quality of local musicians.
Kingfest's line-up covers a wide range of music - from the hard-rocking grooves of Joel Plaskett, The Trews and Sloan (all performing on Friday evening's inaugural concert) to the all-Canadian cast of O Susanna, Justin Rutledge, Lynn Miles, the Jim Cuddy Band and Prairie Oyster who'll perform on Saturday night.
(CBC Radio will record most of the Saturday evening concert as part of its new programming on Radi0 2).
An to cap it all off, what about a Sunday evening concert with witty political US artist Susan Werner, blues singer Ndidi Onukwulu with Madagascar Slim, environmentalist songwriter Sarah Harmer and the legendary Bruce Cockburn?  Hosts of the weekend main stage concerts will be Winnipeg's comic performer Al Simmons (the only artist on the bill who's starred on Sesame Street) and Toronto guitarist and comedian Wendell Ferguson.
Artists taking part in Kingfest daytime programming include Nashville performer Kieran Kane (formerly a member of the best-selling country band The O'Kanes), Canadian songwriters Katherine Wheatley, Nancy Dutra, Ariana Gillis, Pat Robitaille, and the duo Dala, as well as Mike Stevens, the Sarnia-based harmonica virtuoso, who will appear with multi-instrumentalist Ray McLain. The pair will also take part in a Sunday afternoon gospel show on the main stage along with the Toronto Mass Choir.  Many of the evening concert performers will also play daytime events as well.

Habitat for Humanity benefits from Kingfest
Two dollars from every ticket sold for Kingfest will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, the international non-profit organization that builds sustainable and affordable homes for low-income people. Income raised will be spent, in part, on the construction of two houses in the Newmarket area.
