Taylor Swift proved to be a big winner at the 41st annual CMT Awards Monday (Apr. 14) night, including Female Video of the Year and Video of the Year for "Our Song". Trace Adkins' “I Got My Game On” won the Male Video; Rascal Flatts “Take Me There”- Group Video with Sugarland 's "Stay"; winning Duo Video - Sugarland for “Stay”; Wide Open Country Video honors went to Alison Krauss-Robert Plant for “Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On)”, Bon Jovi’s “Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore” with LeAnn Rimes won Collaborative honors; Kellie Pickler-"I Wonder" took home a trio of buckles for Performance, Tearjerker and USA Weekend Break-through Video. Brad Paisley's "Online" won Comedy video honors; Supporting Character went to Rodney Carrington in "I Got My Game On". Video Director went to Michael Salomon -“High Maintenance Woman” Toby Keith, “I Got My Game On” Trace Adkins, and “Love Me If You Can” Toby Keith.) Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus hosted the show and performed "Ready, Set, Don't Go". Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Keith Urban with Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill also performed. Leading in to commercial breaks, brief performances were offered by newcomers Luke Bryan, Bucky Covington, Lady Antebellum, James Otto, Ashton Shepherd and Chuck Wicks.
Dierks Bently will headline some of the biggest music festivals in the U.S. this year, and will travel to Canada, Ireland, England, Norway, France and Japan before the summer is over. Bentley is the only country act scheduled to perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago.
Michelle Ross (@Musicrow, Apr. 15) reported that Charlie Daniels and his wife Hazel will be honored by Cumberland University on May 3 as part of the University's 166th Commencement Ceremony. The Daniels' will receive the University's Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award for selfless community service.
Eddie Montgomery and his wife Tracy were honored by the The Danville City (KY) Commission on Apr. 14. Mayor Hugh Coomer and the Board of Commissioners recognized the couple's charitable efforts in helping the fire department’s Christmas Toy Drive the past few years. Mayor Coomer cited their efforts, both in raising more than $20,000 over the past five years for the Toy Program, to bringing country music fans to Boyle County, where they reside.
George Strait's 1992 movie, Pure Country, has inspired a Broadway musical expected to debut in the 2008-2009 season. The music will be composed by Steve Dorff (who co-wrote "I Cross My Heart" and "Heartland" for the original film). Lyrics will be written by John Bettis (a co-writer of "Heartland"). Peter Masterson (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) will direct and co-author the book.
Dolly Parton will debut the stage version of her hit film 9 To 5 this September in Los Angeles. She also has her eye on a Broadway debut in the spring of 2009, and is hoping to take the production overseas to London's West End. While Dolly played secretary Doralee Rhodes in the original movie, she will not be onstage during the play. But she did write new music for the production, including "Backwoods Barbie," the title track on her latest album.
Steve Azar has launched Ride Records, a division of Ride Entertainment Group. Azar's CD, Indianola will be the newly formed label's first project, co-released on his Dang label, and nationally distributed by Redeye. Azar has also partnered with industry veteran Harry Nelson as National Director of Radio and Media Promotion for the new imprint. Azar's “I Won’t Let You Lead Me Down" will be the first single released to country radio.
News Briefs: Trace Adkins' eighth studio album will be released this fall. ••• Ralph Emery joined Lorianne Crook & Charlie Chase on the set of their RFD-TV show last week (Ap.. 9) to celebrate the news that Comcast now offers the cable network to Middle Tennessee subscribers. ••• Sean Michael Currier Band, in association with Big-time Entertainment, has announced a concert on April 30 at Fuel, one of the premier music venues in Nashville (where CMT's "Gone Country" is being filmed). Currier, resident of Knoxville, TN, recently signed a publishing deal with Los Angeles based Hitt Music Group and has a catalogue of songs being pitched to top name entertainers, labels and tv/video production companies. Sean appeared on the album "Let the Nations be Glad" with saxophonist Scott Olsen and vocalist Sandi Patti.
Andy Griggs will headline the International Fan Club Organization's annual IFCO "Fun Fest" Show on Wednesday, June 4th (7:00 pm) at Cadillac Ranch in Nashville, TN. The lineup also includes Lynn Anderson, Lane Brody, David Church, Emma Mae Jacob, Benita Hill, Moore & Moore, Michael Peterson and Jimmie Van Zant. The evening will include presentation of the annual IFCO Tex Ritter Award (honoree to be announced). Robert K. Oermann will be the night's host. IFCO band leader is Joe Bob Barnhil. George Jones' Burn Your Playhouse Down (The Unreleased Duets) will be released July 8 through a collaboration by Vanguard and Bandit Records. The collection includes a previously-unavailable recording with Tammy Wynette, as well as duets with Jim Lauderdale, Vince Gill, Keith Richards, Leon Russell, Ricky Skaggs, Tanya Tucker and others.
Direct Holdings Americas Inc. has announced launch of the new imprint, Saguaro Road Records. Direct Holdings also markets and sells audio and video entertainment products under the Time Life brand. Saguaro Road will debut this summer with a new album, "No Rules" by Rebecca Lynn Howard. The label will be distributed in retail channels in the U.S. exclusively by WEA Corp., Warner Music Group Corp.'s U.S. sales and retail distribution company. Additional signings are expected in the next few weeks.
News Briefs: Dismal ratings on the premier episode (April 8) of Secret Talents of the Stars prompted CBS to cancel the series. Clint Black appeared as a standup comic on the first show, which also featured Star Trek actor George Takei singing Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again", actor Danny Bonaduce, singer Mya and TV personality Ben Stein. ••• Jewel will serve as a judge on the new season's Nashville Star which will premiere June 9 on NBC. Her John Rich-produced country album, Perfectly Clear, is due June 3. ••• Lee Hilliard was chosen first place winner on FameCast’s online talent competition. The former 4Runner member will take home a $10,000 prize. ••• Josh Turner will portray George Beverly Shea in, Billy: The Early Years, a movie about Billy Graham that is being filmed in Middle Tennessee.
Steven Curtis Chapman, Merle Kilgore, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Steve Wariner, Kirk Whalum and Hank Williams Sr will be be inducted to the Music City Walk of Fame on April 20. The Walk of Fame is an official project of Music City, Inc., the charitable foundation of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Bureau (NCVB), and is produced with the support of presenting sponsor Gibson Guitar and sponsors GAC, the City of Nashville and Metro Parks.
Inside Music Row television show recently caught up with Zane Lewis in Nashville. The resulting interview, which includes performance footage from the hip, Music City venue, 12th & Porter, airs this week in 80 markets (including NY, LA, DC, Detroit & Tampa), putting Lewis in front of 23 million viewers. “This is pretty incredible,” says Zane of his first national TV appearance. “I could tour till I’m 60 and probably not reach this many people.” Lewis is currently making his way through a radio promotion tour for his first national single, “Come With Me”.
