“Caught In The Trap”

ELVIS has entered the building! No wait it’s … it’s Dwight Yoakam! Thank Goodness he wears a very distinctive cowboy hat or otherwise I would have not known, because I am only 5’1’’ and I couldn’t get near the stage because of the 800 plus SCREAMING fans standing in front of the stage… and YES there were men screaming too!

Wranglers and hats, Levi’s and caps and cleavage galore. Thank goodness there were no cages present! <lol>

Dwight hit the stage with his 3-piece band like a tornado on the plains. You could barely hear the intro to ‘Borrowed Love’ over the roar of the fans. It was as if the audience's reaction fueled the flames coming from the stage. The entire club became the dance floor. Later, as I tried to make my way closer to the stage for a better view, Dwight began the first bar of ‘Ring of Fire.’ Now into the second bar.... everybody was moving to the beat, even the ageless couple beside me who turned out to be country legend Earl Scruggs and his beautiful wife. Some other country artists spotted getting to be just regular fans were Jeff Bates, Marty Brown and Eddie Montgomery (He’s looking so fit & fine!) This was the place to be.

‘Stop The World’ and ‘Streets Of Bakersfield ’ Dwight’s classic standards had the two-steppers up and stepping! Can you believe ‘Streets Of Bakersfield’ was on Dwight’s 1988 CD ~ BUENAS NOCHES FROM A LONELY ROOM? Goes to show you his love of music is a timeless mixture of diverse musical inspirations, country roots with a multitude of music genres brought together like an old family recipe.

My favorite Dwight CD is "THIS TIME" and I got a treat! He sang ‘A Thousand Miles From Nowhere’ wooed the crowd and came across emotional and sincere. Sometimes it is hard to do when you're staring at 800 standing fans next to the stage. He is an entertainer to say the least. ‘Fast As You’ another cut from the CD and another favorite kept me once again moving out of the way of the grooving crowd. The girls were showing the boys ... how low they could get to the dance floor without splitting their painted-on jeans. Many in the crowd were wondering why (I hope we didn’t miss it) Dwight didn’t perform ‘Ain’t That Lonely Yet.’ The song earned Dwight a # 1 single and a 1993 Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance (Male category). NOTE: Another single from the same CD, ‘Pocket Of A Clown,’ received a Grammy nomination in the same category the following year. In that wasn’t enough, in 2001 " A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" from dwightyoakamacoustic.net was nominated for "Best Male Country Vocal Performance."

All in all I would give it 5 stars plus, plus and plus, plus out of 5 stars. This means awesome, by Kentucky ratings. Exciting, excellent and entertaining! Country legend Dwight definitely gave the crowd their money’s worth and then some. I heard nothing but rave reviews and “worth the money” talk after the show. (Tix were $35 & $40.) This is saying a lot about the show that will be labeled as concert of the season. Dwight never took a break and continued to play and keep the crowd on their feet.

Other highlights were:

Little Sister (smokin’ yes!)

Turn Me Loose

Honky Tonk Man

Long White Cadillac

The stand up bass player; sexy-sixty Dave Rowe in his overalls. I loved watching his musical hands!

Guitar player Keith Gaddis with the wife-beater t-shirt who wore it WELL!
