Nashville, Tenn. (January 11, 2007) -- The 25th Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic (GSTRC) is scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday, March 23rd & 24th 2007 at the San Antonio Rose Palace in San Antonio, Texas. The event, which originated as a small family roping by George and his brother Buddy in 1982, has grown into the most prestigious open Team Roping competition in the country. The GSTRC has become the premiere open in the sport with hundreds of thousands of dollars up for grabs each year. "
In my opinion, this is the best roping in the world for the money and the prizes, said heeler Kinney Harrell.
"If you win 'The Strait,' it can set you up for the rest of the year."
"My goal is, and has always been, to make the GSTRC the best roping out there. I won't be satisfied until I know it is," said George Strait.
Strait and his family have certainly achieved that goal. The GSTRC consistently attracts the biggest names in the sport each year including past GSTRC champions Brad Culpepper, Jake Barnes, Speed Williams, Rich Skelton, Tyler Magnus, Clay O'Brien Cooper, and reigning winners Allen Bach and Matt Tyler.
The GSTRC is not just for the big names however. As an open roping, ropers of all levels may compete alongside each other for a chance at the big winnings. In 2006, 570 teams competed for more than $425,000 in cash and prizes. Speed Williams and Brad Culpepper eventually walked away with Champions title to go along with $55,790 each. In addition to the cash, they each won a Chevy Silverado Dually pickup from Cavendar Chevrolet (Boerne, TX) and a Strait X-treme 3-horse slant trailer from Bruton Trailers.
The GSTRC continues the "Red Wrapped Challenge"- sponsored by Wayne Wright Lawyers- an exciting $10,000 per round progressive contest. If no winners in the first two rounds, $40,000 is up for grabs in the final round.
"The most gratifying thing about putting on the GSTRC comes when we present the awards to the winners," said Strait. "The looks on their faces, the excitement and their words of appreciation make all the hard work worth every minute."
All ropers will participate on Friday, March, 23rd for cash and prizes. Following Friday's competition, the top 50 teams will come back for the final three rounds on Saturday, March, 24th. Entry fee for the 25th annual George Strait Team Roping Classic will be $800 per team. Each roper will have the opportunity to enter up to three times with different partners.
Teams can call 210-698-9251 between 5-10p.m., Monday March 12 and Tuesday March 13. Ropers can pay entry fees Thursday March 22 between 5-10p.m. Dally on both ends and PRCA dress code in effect.
