| Last
night (Feb. 1st, 2001), Lisa Brokop and Keith Thompson did a concert at
the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, in Oakville, ON.
ThatsCountry.com wasn't able to attend but we had a number of
"roving reporters" on-hand to bring you their review of the
show.
These are the comments of the
ticket winners that attended the concert. Thank you to Terry McInnes
for donating her photos as well.
"February 2, 2001
There was some undeniable Canadian talent at the Oakville Centre for the
Performing Arts last night with the performances of Keith Thompson and
Lisa
Brokop.
Hamilton's 820 CHAM Radio Morning personality Dick Reeves hosted the
show.
He introduced Keith Thompson who quickly warmed the crowd up with with
acoustic performances of three all original tunes. The Guelph native's
vocal
range beautifully complemented the second song, a touching ballad which
he
dedicated to Zachary Destun, the Cambridge, Ontario baby who recently
received a heart transplant. Keith has a very energetic stage presence
and
he got the crowd going with his last tune, an obvious favourite,
"Cheshire
Cat". Keith has laid down 18 tracks on a new CD slated for release
this
Spring. I highly recommend adding this talented entertainer's CD to your
library, I'm sure we'll be hearing him for a long time to come.
After a brief intermission, Lisa Brokop took to the stage with a
four-member
band and proceeded to enthrall the audience for two hours with awesome
acoustic, stripped down versions of new songs from her CD
"Undeniable" along
with several previously released songs including "Take That",
"Language of
Love" and "When You Get To Be You".
She warmed the crowd up with her first number, a rousing gospel song.
Candles and a carpet on the small stage added a warmth and intimacy to
the
performance which included her new songs "'Timeless",
Something Undeniable",
"Whiskey and Wine", "Cross My Heart" and the very
touching "Keep Mom and Dad
in Love" which she recorded as a duet with the legendary Hal
Ketchum. Her
vocal range and powerful, distinct sound were incredible on every song,
including old country favourites "I Don't Want To Play
House" by Tammy
Wynette and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by the country
legend Hank
Williams Sr. She wrapped up her performance with "Dark Side of the
Moon", a
song she co-wrote with Kim Patton Johnston. Her beautiful voice was
complemented with back up by two acoustic guitars, a soulful Dobro,
drums
and bass guitar.
British Columbia-born Brokop, now living in Nashville, told the small
but
enthusiastic crowd that she recently recorded three new videos in
Calgary
for the new CD. This show was her last performance in a cross-country,
two-week tour. Lisa is finding tremendous satisfaction in both writing
songs
and performing them, and although she has a thoroughly modern sound,
this
lady hasn't forgotten her country roots, that's undeniable."

"February 1, 2001......
Something "Undeniable" is when Lisa Brokop takes the
stage, this lady is in control and delivers a solid performance.
Last night at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Lisa
made the last stop of her Ontario Tour and delivered an eclectic mixture
of her past hits with a wonderful sampling from her new CD
Undeniable.
In the intimate setting of the OCPA, the music was enhanced with
the accoustic presentations....everyone enjoyed the informal, up close
and personal setting.....it left you with not only with the pleasure of
the evening, but you walked away feeling you got to know this artist as
a person. Having co-authored many of the songs this CD leaves you
wanting more, and "that's a good thing".
At the close of a solid two and a half hour performance, Lisa came back
to the stage to deliver two encores, and then signed her CD's and
chatted with fans in the foyer." ........thank you to Terry McInnes
"Thanks for the tickets. It
was a great show. Lisa did an accoustic show, except for
electric bass.
They started off with a
gospel number-4 part harmony and it was the best blend I have heard to
date. They all sat on
stools and played without all the theatrics and it was so nice to
actually hear the singer and understand what they were saying. I
stopped on the way out and thanked the sound man for a great job.
The sound and volume was perfect for a room that size. I
saw Lisa about two years ago and has she ever polished her act.
Very smooth and great control of her voice. The
room is very good-it has good sound and super visibility from every
seat.
The package was good.-Keith
sang well. He is an excellent singer but did basically all
slower ballads. A couple of up tempo tunes and
he will be a great act to go see.
All in all it was a very
good night and I thank you again for the tickets. I'm glad
someone in the area is doing something for country music.
Keep it up"
